For a definitely unique experience, pop along to the Toy Soldier Factory in Kilnamartyna Village in West Cork. One of only three toy soldier factories in the world – and the only one that is also a museum.

A great outing for all the family are their casting and painting workshops whereby you get to cast and paint your own miniature metal cast figure –including fairies, cowboys, ballerinas, teddy bears and of course soldiers.  Ideally, it is for children aged 6 years and upwards. Although, it is also very popular with bigger children. Indeed, staff at the factory note that their most enthusiastic clients tend to be adult males! The workshops cost EUR 7 per person and last about 30 minutes.

The on-site shop is a fantastic for quirky gifts guaranteed to delight children of all ages. Especially popular are their intricate chess-sets complete with Lord of the Rings figurines.  They also have wonderful golf chess sets and Battle of Waterloo sets.  A great present for children is their Prince August brand metal casting moulds with figurines sets such as “Fabulous Fairies”, “The Wild Geese” and also a naivety character set that allows you to make a complete Christmas crib.  Each mould is very durable and guarantees at least 1,500 figurines, meaning you can create an entire army in an afternoon!

Mary Moynihan is hugely helpful in explaining the process of metal figure casting and indeed is happy to provide quick demonstrations showing how it is done. It’s quite fascinating to watch her in action – a process that has remained unchanged since the 17th Century.
